Leeds United missed out on Bundesliga midfielder Steven Zuber this week and La Liga ace Ibai Gomez will not be moving to the Championship either.
For the second time in two days, Leeds United have missed out on a potential Samu Saiz replacement.
The Mirror reported this week that the Whites wanted to bring Hoffenheim’s £10.8 million midfielder Steven Zuber to Elland Road, only for the Swiss international to join Bundesliga strugglers Stuttgart on loan 24 hours later.
And, on Thursday, any lingering hopes Leeds might have had of bringing Ibai Gomez to Elland Road were brought to an end, too.
Goal claimed in the autumn that Marcelo Bielsa was confident of reuniting with a player he managed at Athletic Bilbao with Ibai producing the best displays of his career in La Liga with Deportivo Alaves.
But the 29-year-old winger has now sealed a return to Athletic with the club’s official Twitter account confirming Ibai’s move back to the San Mames.
So this will just add to the frustration of Leeds United fans, who are understandably concerned that a lack of January additions could cost them dear with promotion on the line, particularly with Lewis Baker following Saiz out of Elland Road this week.
El Gol Digital claim that Athletic will pay about £2.7 million for Ibai.
