'Would be the difference': Sunderland fans react to Will Grigg rumours

Sunderland fans celebrate during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Everton at the Stadium of Light on May 11, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

Will Grigg scored 19 goals as Wigan Athletic won the League One title last season but could he have a similar impact at Jack Ross's Sunderland?

Sunderland are allegedly looking to make a number of additions to their squad, with an immediate return to the Championship up for grabs.

The Chronicle reported on Tuesday morning that Jack Ross is set to receive a welcome defensive addition, with 21-year-old Jimmy Dunne arriving on loan from Premier League Burnley until the end of the season.

The Mail (8 January, page 72) reports that Wigan Athletic forward Will Grigg is also a target, with the Northern Ireland international boasting a prolific record in League One.

While the promising Dunne would be a fine addition to Sunderland's back line, it is fair to say the potential arrival of Grigg has really got the fans talking. And for good reason.

The 27-year-old's tally of four goals in the Championship this season is far from outstanding but it is his record in League One which marks him out as a possible title-winning signing.

Grigg plundered 19 goals as Wigan won the League One title as recently as last season. In fact, he has scored 84 times in his last four seasons in the fourth tier of English football, finding the net at a prolific rate for Walsall and MK Dons before moving to the DW Stadium.

And with the future of top scorer Josh Maja uncertain, Sky Sports claiming that the 20-year-old rejected a new contract last week, links with Grigg could hardly have been better timed.
