Celtic reportedly want to bring Oliver Burke to the Scottish Premiership while West Bromwich Albion are targeting Everton’s James McCarthy.

Oliver Burke clearly needs a fresh start.

West Bromwich Albion paid £15 million to sign the Scottish winger from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2017 but he has struggled to make any sort of an impact at The Hawthorns, playing just 46 minutes of Championship football this season.

As a result, speculation has intensified suggesting that Burke could leave West Brom on loan in the January transfer window, with the Daily Record reporting that Celtic are interested.

And the Express has provided an update on Friday morning which could be good news for Brendan Rodgers.

It is understood that Burke’s departure could be accelerated if West Brom succeed in landing James McCarthy on loan from Everton for the rest of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international may be a central midfielder rather than a winger, meaning he would not push Burke down the pecking order directly. But McCarthy earns a hefty £50,000 a week at Everton (Spotrac), meaning West Brom would perhaps want to get Burke off the wage bill should the former Wigan FA Cup winner arrive.

Interestingly, Celtic have tried to sign McCarthy themselves, with the Daily Record claiming in 2016 that he was a target for Brendan Rodgers only for Everton’s £15 million price-tag to scupper the deal.
