Championship challengers West Bromwich Albion will reportedly loan out Oliver Burke in January with Nottingham Forest and Celtic keen.

Since the summer of 2016, Oliver Burke has cost almost £30 million in transfer fees, although the forward some have called Scotland’s answer to Gareth Bale is a long way from justifying his hefty price-tag.

After struggling for opportunities in Germany with RB Leipzig, Burke moved to West Bromwich Albion for a club record £15 million but has once again found himself stuck on the sidelines. The 21-year-old has played just 46 minutes of Championship football all season for the Baggies.

But could a dramatic return to where it all began be on the cards?

Burke started his career at Nottingham Forest before his big-money switch to Leipzig two-and-a-half years ago and, according to the Mirror (2 January, page 45), the East Midlands side are monitoring the situation with West Brom willing to loan him out this month.

Interestingly, Aitor Karanka’s Forest are set to face competition from Celtic. The Scottish Premiership champions are also keen on offering Burke a fresh start in the hope that he will give Brendan Rodgers’ side a timely boost in their pursuit of an eighth straight Scottish Premiership title.

But a return to Forest, where Burke played the best football of his admittedly short career, will surely appeal.
