Paul Merson has lauded Everton winger Bernard as a 'very, very talented footballer', but claimed that he's not fussed about scoring goals for the club.

Brazil international Bernard moved to Goodison Park in the summer on a free transfer after his contract at Shakhtar Doneskt expired.

Since his arrival, the 26-year-old is yet to find the back of the net for his new club, but the tricky winger has impressed on the left-hand side by providing four assists in 17 league matches for his teammates.

Speaking prior to Everton's defeat to Brighton at the weekend, Merson explained what he likes about Bernard, but he did make an interesting claim about the player.

“I think he’s a very, very talented footballer,” Merson told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show on 29/12/2019 at 2:50 pm. “Very comfortable on the ball, he runs at people and takes people on. I am a big fan of his and I like watching him play.

“I don’t think he is fussed about goals,” Merson tells Matt Le Tissier when he suggests that Bernard needs to add goals to his game.

Whilst Everton boss Marco Silva has shown faith in Bernard by starting him in the Premier League on a number of occasions, the Brazilian has only completed 90 minutes of football once.

After starting back-to-back games for the Toffees during a busy festive period, Silva might opt to rotate his squad on New Year's day when Everton welcome Leicester City to Goodison Park.

The Merseyside club are currently sitting in the Premier League's top 10 and a positive result in midweek, added with other results going for them, Silva's side could find themselves as high as seventh by the end of the week.
