From Cardi B to XXXTentacion: A Record Year for Hip-hop

The Billboard 200 charts for 2018 featured an impressive eighteen hip-hop albums to hit the number one spot.

Many continue to argue that hip-hop is the new rock and roll, and the the genre’s most prominent artists continue to soar. This year has been one of the best for music in recent memory, and it will come as no surprise that the majority of the year’s most exciting releases were in fact hip-hop efforts. Although a lot of the best ones didn’t actually feature as front-runners on the Billboard charts, there are some terrific records which hit this peak nonetheless. Here they are:

-Logic - Bobby Tarantino II

-XXXTentacion - ?

-Cardi B - Invasion of Privacy

-J. Cole - KOD

-Post Malone - beerbongs & bentleys

-Kanye West - Ye

-Drake - Scorpion

-Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD

-Eminem - Kamikaze

-BROCKHAMPTON - Iridescence

-Lil Wayne - Tha Carter V

-Metro Boomin - NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES

-Meek Mill - Championships

-XXXTentacion - Skins

-Kodak Black - Dying to Live

It’s certainly an impressive and varied selection of albums, and some of them are absolutely terrific releases. Despite not all being successful with fan-bases and critics, they have all contributed to another successful year for hip-hop, making up almost half of the entire year’s number ones. Who knows, 2019 could see even more take the spot.
