The Rangers manager Steven Gerrard recently expressed his admiration for the rumoured Ibrox target.
Rangers fans are reacting on Twitter to news that one of Steven Gerrard’s January targets has moved elsewhere.
The Rangers manager Gerrard admitted his admiration for Dowell earlier this month (Scottish Sun), but the Everton attacking midfielder has instead signed for Sheffield United on a half-season loan.
Dowell excelled on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, scoring 10 goals and setting up five in 45 appearances.
And the England Under-21 international could have provided the creative spark Rangers have arguably lacked from the centre of the park this season.
But what are those of a Gers persuasion saying about the news of Sheffield United’s latest capture?

Good, Rangers need experienced and battle hardened men not another pampered ‘promising’ youngster on loan from England…— Douglas Kinnear (@Dougiek85) December 28, 2018
be interesting to see how much he plays, the loan for Woodburn to same club didn’t work out— Scott Cameron (@Cammy26_2) December 28, 2018
Disappointed Kieran Dowell has signed for #SUFC as it sounded like the manager fancied him when he spoke publicly about him. Hopefully something lined up as our midfield is trash.— BMC Rangers Rants (@BMCRangersRants) December 28, 2018

We have to aim for more quality than young loanees, we need big game players who scare crucial goals. January will be a pivital window.— Rangers Fans Channel (@Allthingsgers) December 28, 2018
He’s a wonderful player. Bit gutted we’re missing out on him, of course you’d ideally sign someone of that ability on a permanent basis but he’d do a great job.— Fraser Hamilton (@FraserH24) December 28, 2018

Dowell played alongside present and past Rangers players, Joe Worrall and Barrie McKay at Forest last season.
And it is to England’s second tier that the 21-year-old returns, hoping to help Sheffield United back to the Premier League from fourth position.
His arrival there could bring an end to the Bramall Lane spell of another reported Rangers target, Ben Woodburn, who has struggled to make an impact on loan from Liverpool.
Would Dowell have been a good fit for Rangers?
