The Reds were merciless in their 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, while Manchester City suffered another huge blow thanks to a second consecutive defeat, slipping to third.
Dejan Lovren gave Liverpool a first-half lead at Anfield, Mohamed Salah won and scored a penalty after the break, and Xherdan Shaqiri and substitute Fabinho wrapped up the points against former boss Rafa Benitez.
Following the Brazilian's first goal for the club, he was congratulated by Salah, with Lovren in the background looking on.
The photograph capturing the moment shows the Croatian pulling a face which could be interpreted as bemusement, surprise or even heartbreak - much to some fans' amusement on Twitter:
Much to Agent Bobby's delight, Salah posted the tweet himself with the caption "really, we were just being friendly", and some Liverpool fans couldn't help but dish out a bit of banter towards poor Lovren:
So funny between you and lovren. No doubt he’ll be saying you’ve not scored a good as goal as him this season— paul (@paulp_123) December 26, 2018
That look, Dejan looks devastated. I think you can see his heart breaking— Alex Alinia (@alexalinia) December 26, 2018
Haha love this but @MoSalah loves Lovren too much. He is his number 1❤❤❤— Batesy (@pablobates68) December 26, 2018
Hello darkness my old friend— Gav Hanson (@gavhanson) December 27, 2018
Lovren will need to dust himself off as Liverpool have two huge fixtures coming up between now and New Year's Day, with Arsenal at home and then Manchester City away.
Should Jurgen Klopp's side go on to lift the coveted trophy come May, many eyes will surely be on the defender when it comes to the celebrations - let's hope Salah doesn't stray again!
