Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly interested in Mexican World Cup star Edson Alvarez; an Apetura title winner with Club America.

One of the World Cup’s breakthrough stars has been linked with a shock move to Celtic ahead of the January transfer window.
According to Diario Record, Celtic have shown an interest in Club America’s 21-year-old centre-back Edson Alvarez, a man who has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months and played in all four of Mexico’s games over in Russia.
Alvarez is highly-rated in his homeland, having already earned 20 caps for his country and helping Club America win the Apetura title last week with two goals against a Cruz Azul side coached by none other than Pedro Caixinha.
But what could Celtic fans expect from Alvarez?
In quotes reported by Goal in 2017, former Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio hailed the youngster’s technical ability before handing him his first international cap.
“We think that Edson is a very technical player with a good aerial game,” Osorio said.

“It seems that he has that (composure), that extra second to make a good decision whether it’s a back three or a back four. And we think that he can be very effective in midfield.
“So, his attributes amongst others are his aerial game, he’s technical player, he can run with the ball, he can pass it, and it seems that he is indeed one of the Mexican players with a great present and a very prominent future.”
It all sounds rather promising then.
If Alvarez really is a defender with excellent technical skills who can play the ball accurately from the back, this perhaps explains why a footballing purist like Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring him to Celtic next month.
