Celtic’s pursuit of a new centre-back has taken them far and wide – even to Mexico.

According to Diario Record, the Scottish Premiership champions are interested in the Club America defender Edson Alvarez. And, while he is hardly a household name in Glasgow, Alvarez is well established in his homeland having started all four of Mexico’s games at the 2018 World Cup.

The 21-year-old also inspired Club America to the Apetura title last week, scoring twice to beat Pedro Caixinha’s Cruz Azul side.

And it seems that Celtic fans are excited about the prospect of the 20-time international making his way to Parkhead, most likely as a successor for the out-of-contract Belgian powerhouse Dedryck Boyata.

Capable of playing at right-back and defensive midfield, Alvarez would certainly give Brendan Rodgers some much needed versatility while his impressive technical skills should make him a good fit for the former Liverpool manager.

Now, there are certainly similarities to be drawn between Alvarez and Virgil van Dijk, the £75 million centre-back who is arguably the world’s best. Van Dijk moved to British football with Celtic back in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength since.
