Spurs have exercised the option to increase defender Jan Vertonghen's contract by a further year until 2020, BBC Sport report.

The 31-year-old is one of the club's longest serving players, having joined from Ajax in 2012.

However, despite currently nursing a thigh injury, Vertonghen has been as good as ever this season, and is one of the most consistent centre backs in Europe this decade.

A cultured Belgian international who reads the game well and plays out from the back, the news of Vertonghen's extension has been met with delight from Spurs fans.

The former Ajax star is a fan favourite at the North London club due to his consistency and classy performances  during his career so far at Tottenham.

The defender is currently out of action for the next couple of weeks with a thigh injury.

Fans took to Twitter to react to the positive news...
