Everton fans seem divided over Marco Silva’s idea to potentially play Leighton Baines in midfield.
Baines has struggled badly for game time this season, with Lucas Digne taking his left-back spot.
The experienced full-back could now be moved into midfield, according to Silva.
“It is possible,” the Portuguese boss said to the Liverpool Echo. “You are talking about a player with fantastic individual qualities. It is not something I have spoken to him about, but it could be something that happens in the future.”
The comments have drawn a mixed response from Everton supporters, who are divided over whether or not it is a good idea.
While some Everton fans think it is worth trying Baines out in midfield, others are more concerned.
Don’t even think about it, it’s absolutely ridiculous just release him at the end of the season.— TheBlues (@gflan02) December 18, 2018
I would love this— L (@liaminho) December 17, 2018
He has qualities but sadly he lacks the legs to play anywhere in an energetic Silva side.— Steve Ferns (@ferninho) December 17, 2018
Been saying it for weeks. Worth a try. May not work, but I can see him being useful— Ricky Rimmer (@Ricky8r) December 17, 2018
It's a ridiculous idea. We're trying to play a high(er) tempo game and we're going to slow it down with him? Complete non-starter.— Jonathan (@jonathangard) December 18, 2018
There is of course an alternative to playing Leighton Baines in midfield.— Dave Downie (@daviddownie17) December 18, 2018
Go and buy a midfielder. #EFC
He’ll never play in midfield, that is just nonesense.— Finbar (@salemmohalesh75) December 18, 2018
If Baines could force his way into Everton’s midfield it would provide him with a lifeline at Goodison Park.
The 34-year-old has actually been linked with a move away in recent times, although he has chosen to stick around so far.
Everton have Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes currently playing in midfield for them, and breaking up their partnership would be tough.
