Former Ayr forward McManus, 37, has claimed on Twitter that he has been told that as many as eight clubs in England were watching Shankland in action for his team against Ross County at the weekend.
The 23-year-old striker scored twice for Ayr, as the Scottish Championship game against County at the Somerset Park on Saturday afternoon.
SHANKLAND IS LITERALLY ON FIRE WOW— Tam McManus (@The_Tman10) December 15, 2018
He is a class act big man unfortunately I think now financially out of reach for clubs like Hibs. Been told 8 English clubs are here watching him today. https://t.co/tbWMqdCb8W— Tam McManus (@The_Tman10) December 15, 2018
McManus’s comments on Twitter suggest that Sunderland are facing fierce competition in their quest to land Shankland in the January transfer window.
Shankland has scored 18 goals and provided four assists in 16 Scottish Championship appearances for Ayr so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.com.
