Glasgow Rangers boast an impressive defensive record, but Gordon Smith wants another defender brought to Ibrox in January.

Gordon Smith has told the Sunday Post that he wants to see Rangers make three signings in January, with one centre-back on the shopping list as he remains unconvinced about all of Steven Gerrard's current options.

The Gers sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership following their win on Sunday. The victory helped get rid of some of the disappointment from their Europa League exit in midweek.

But while they may sit at the summit of the table, the majority of the Rangers supporters will be expecting Gerrard to go out and strengthen his options when the window opens next month.

A striker appears to be the obvious priority with Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty the only senior options available to the manager. But Smith has suggested that he would like to see another centre-back brought in.

"I think he needs to bring in at least three new faces – a quality striker to provide cover for Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty, a creative central midfielder and a new central defender," he told the Sunday Post. "While Dominic Solanke, on loan, and Steven Davis would look obvious possibilities for the first two spots, the third suggestion is trickier – and more controversial.

"Rangers already have four central defenders in Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley, on the books.

"Unfortunately, when I watch these guys play, I am not seeing one top quality player among them."

While Smith's assessment of the quartet is probably fair based on their recent form, it must not be forgotten that Gerrard has not exactly settled on a first-choice pairing.

Rangers Glasgow's Nikola Katic after the 2018

Connor Goldson has been a regular fixture in the side. But the likes of Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley have frequently been rotated, so it has been difficult for the former Brighton man - who has arguably been the best signing of the four so far - to maintain his early season promise.

So it would probably be little surprise if Gerrard did add to his options at the heart of the defence if he felt that a particular target could be the ideal player to galvanise the side.
