Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has tweeted his joy that centre-back partner Joe Gomez has signed a new deal with the club.

(SUN OUT,THE SUN ON SUNDAY OUT) Liverpool's Joe Gomez signs a new contract at Melwood on December 7, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has signed a new long term contract with the club and teammate Virgil Van Dijk took to Twitter to express his delight.

Gomez's new contract runs until 2024 at Anfield, and he has formed a brilliant partnership with Dutchman Van Dijk this season.

The Englishman has played 13 Premier League games with Van Dijk this season, with the pair a major part of a sturdy Reds defence.

Jurgen Klopp's side have conceded only six league goals this season, as a new found solidity at the Merseyside club has seen them rise to the top of the table.

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic back in 2015, and despite a good start at the club, is only now establishing himself as a star player for the Reds.

However, Gomez recently picked up an injury against Burnley that could see the 21-year-old out of action for six weeks.

It is a huge blow to Liverpool's title aspirations, with the often impenetrable duo of Van Dijk and Gomez now broken up.

It is still fantastic news for Klopp and his team that Gomez has committed to the club for another six years, and Van Dijk playfully took to Twitter to show his joy.

Despite his young age, Gomez has proven himself to be a reliable centre-back.

Liverpool are serious title contenders this season, and the combination of Van Dijk and Gomez will be crucial to any potential success.
