Could Sam Gallagher be the solution for Premier League strugglers Southampton? Or is he on his way back to the Championship with Blackburn?
Southampton’s lack of goalscorers will have already become clear to new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Austrian was in the stands to watch The Saints waste chance after chance in the 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night and, in his first game in the dugout, Southampton were toothless in a 1-0 loss at Cardiff City.
So it remains to be seen what Hasenhuttl has planned for Sam Gallagher.
The 23-year-old striker has been unavailable for the last few months with a hamstring injury but is set to make his return to action and, according to The Sun (9 December, page 57), is already being targeted with the transfer window set to swing open in January.
The Sun claims that Blackburn Rovers want to bring Gallagher back to Ewood Park on loan with the forward still admired in Lancashire on the back of his impressive 2016/17 loan spell at the club.
Gallagher netted 12 times in 39 starts for Rovers, although he couldn’t save them from relegation. The Sun suggests that Blackburn are one of a number of clubs interested and it will be interesting to see who else is in the race.
The Sun stated in July that Stoke City wanted to sign Gallagher for £7 million, while the same publication claimed that Sheffield United (15 July, page 59) were keen too. And Chris Wilder’s side appear to be on the lookout for a marquee striker signing.
