Sunderland fans mock Newcastle on Twitter about Fabio Borini rumours

After three years at Sunderland, could Fabio Borini return to the Premier League with the Black Cats' local rivals Newcastle United?

Surely Newcastle United aren’t going to sign another former Sunderland player, right?

With Javier Manquillo, Ki Sung-Yeung and DeAndre Yedlin having already arrived on Tyneside via spells on the Wear, it has been claimed over in Italy that Fabio Borini could also stride down an increasingly well-worn path.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle are interested in bringing the Italian back to the Premier League with his future at AC Milan uncertain.

And Sunderland fans have not wasted an opportunity to mock their local rivals. After all, Borini was hardly a massive hit on Wearside given that he scored just 17 goals in 93 games for the Black Cats.

Newcastle fans may be wondering out loud why Rafa Benitez apparently wants a player who hardly set the world alight a few miles down the road but the former Liverpool and Swansea City is not bereft of qualities.

Borini is a hard-working, passionate and versatile footballer who would give Benitez a range of tactical options. He is a striker by trade but has even played in a wing-back role at Milan, which will suit the Spaniard if he wants to make a three-man defence his go-to formation.
