Celtic failed to beat Motherwell on Wednesday night at Fir Park.

Pundit and ex-Celtic player Chris Sutton looks on prior to the Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on December 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has told BT Sport 3’s live coverage of Celtic’s draw against Motherwell on Wednesday night that Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths need to start improving their performances – and called for a new striker in January.

Ryan Christie gave Celtic the lead in the 13th minute after a good pass from Kieran Tierney, but Griffiths then missed a penalty. Edouard came off the bench with 25 minutes to play, but he looked way off the pace.

Scotland international Griffiths is on his way back from a lengthy layoff with injury, but he has managed to score just six goals in 18 league and cup appearances for the Scottish champions this season.

Club-record signing Edouard, who cost Celtic £9million in the summer, has scored 12 in 25 games – but he looked disinterested after coming off the bench. Celtic icon Sutton criticised both, and described the striker role as a problem area.

“I don’t think Celtic this season have enough centre-forwards,” Sutton said. “I know it was Leigh Griffiths’ first game back, but he was not good enough. And Edouard has been inconsistent.

“It is a problem area for Celtic. One of those two really needs to step up and start performing better. I thought they were sloppy at times.”

Odsonne Edouard of Celtic takes on Shaleum Logan of Aberdeen during the Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on December 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Danny Johnson’s superb 88th-minute equaliser sees Celtic slip to third place in the Scottish Premiership table, missing the chance to go top. They sit level on points with Rangers, but have a game in hand over Steven Gerrard’s side.

Steve Clarke’s Kilmarnock are currently in first place by a point after their 2-0 win over newly-promoted Livingston, but they have played one more game than Rangers – and two more than Celtic.
