Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have previously been linked with Groningen’s impressive Eredivisie centre-back Samir Memisevic.

Could Samir Memisevic to Celtic still be on with the January transfer window set to swing open in the next few weeks?

The impressive FC Groningen defender was heavily linked with a move to the Scottish Premiership towards the end of August. Oslobedenje even claimed that the Bosnian international would be open to joining Brendan Rodgers’ side, only for Celtic to sign Filip Benkovic on loan from Leicester City instead.

But with Dedryck Boyata all-but guaranteed to leave Celtic in 2019 with his contract expiring, and The Mail claiming that Fulham are interested again, there might soon be space at Parkhead for Memisevic once more.

And, interestingly, the 25-year-old has shown in recent weeks that he is more than just a centre-back.

Memisevic has moved into a defensive midfield role in recent weeks for Groningen and impressed in the 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord at the weekend. The 6ft 1ins powerhouse is not the best passer of the ball but he offers steel in front of the defence from a more advanced role.

So Memisevic is a player who would give Rodgers a number of options. His versatility could come in handy with Scott Brown, Celtic’s first-choice defensive midfielder, struggling with injuries of late.
