Mason has signed for Portsmouth on loan from Wolves until January, but he has made a very limited impact at Fratton Park.
The forward has continued to struggle at Portsmouth, with injury curtailing his progress.
Jackett has not written off signing Mason, either on an extended loan or on a permanent transfer in January though.
The Pompey boss said: “I will definitely [leave it as late as possible].
“Goalscorers and forwards are difficult to come about. You have you look after the ones you’ve got, 100 per cent.
“I know he can score goals and I’ve seen that many times myself in the Championship.
“He can do it with the right backing and the right run. We won’t be rushing when we have to make that decision. It's obviously his call and Wolves’ call.”
Wolves are unlikely to stand in Mason’s way if Portsmouth do make a move for the striker, as he appears to have no future at Molineux.
The striker has struggled to make any sort of impact at Wolves, and Nuno is unlikely to turn to him in the Premier League.
Portsmouth are currently leading the way in League One, and if he did stick around on the south coast, then he would be hoping to play his part in a successful promotion push over the second half of the season.
