The Rams had been in excellent form prior to their clash with Villa, picking up 12 points from six matches and boasting impressive wins over promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.
But against Villa, Derby were without the likes of Mason Mount and Martyn Waghorn through injury and Craig Forsyth and Mason Bennett went on to pick up injuries during the encounter.
The international break, in that regard, came at a good time for Frank Lampard’s side as they will look to regroup but they still head into the game against Wednesday without several key players.
Forsyth picked up a ligament injury and is now going to be out long-term, while Lampard recently told reporters how Mount is behind in his recovery and is only expected to return to training in midweek (Derby Telegraph).
The good news is that Waghorn looks to be back, while Craig Bryson is also stepping up his return from injury, though the trip to Hillsborough will probably come too soon for the Scotland international.
The Owls’ aerial threat of Steven Fletcher may prompt Lampard to bring Curtis Davies back into the team, while Bradley Johnson may come back into midfield to combat playmaker Barry Bannan.
With summer signings Scott Malone and Waghorn coming in, plus Davies and Johnson returning, Derby should line up with more of a physical presence and they will need that against a battling Wednesday side looking for their first home win since August.
