Jed Steer has impressed on loan in League One with Charlton Athletic – is a return to Championship giants Aston Villa on the cards?

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer admitted to London News Online on Thursday that Aston Villa had the option to recall on loan goalkeeper Jed Steer during the January transfer window.

And it seems that an early return to Villa Park is genuinely on the cards for the 26-year-old, who has made just two league appearances for the Midland giants since joining from Norwich City all the way back in 2013.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is considering bringing Steer back to his parent club and will discuss the possibility with goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler over the coming weeks.

So the pressure is on Orjan Nyland with just five weeks until the January window swings open.

The Norway international has been Villa’s number one since his arrival from Ingolstadt in August but, despite producing some highlight reel saves, Nyland has not exactly filled the gloves of Sam Johnstone with any real consistency.

Nyland has looked nervy on occasions and made a number of naïve mistakes. And with the out-of-favour Andre Morreira and veteran Mark Bunn the only options in reserve, Steer would be well placed to challenge for the first-team spot should his spell at Charlton come to an end.
