The reported Celtic target joined Aston Villa instead.
But Ryan Christie's performance for Scotland on Tuesday night has ensured that several of those are now finally over it.
Christie was making only his fifth appearance for the Tartan Army against Israel, with McGinn one of the many who withdrew from Alex McLeish's squad.
But the 23-year-old has won plenty of plaudits following the 3-2 win at Hampden Park, in which he set up the second of Celtic teammate James Forrest's hat-trick of goals.
It follows a run of three goals and as many assists in his last five Bhoys outings.
And the following Celtic supporters believe that Christie's recent revival is proof they didn't even need the Aston Villa midfielder.
anyone who says mcginn is better than ryan Christie is on glue— Sean Lundy (@SeanLundy1) November 20, 2018
We roasted the board about the McGinn debacle with in the summer. Mibbes they had an idea that Christie was coming through??— Andy Lee (@dim_tim) November 21, 2018
Don’t want to jump the gun but I’m starting to wonder if there is anything John McGinn can do that Ryan Christie can’t.~ Peter Lawwell liked ~
Celtic done more for Scotland. Forrest has been going to a different level but overlooked in Israel. BR being beset by injury plays McGregor as a 6 and Christie as a 8, it falls into Ecks lap, otherwise we’d be playing a bad defensive mid in MacDonald and the overhyped McGinn.— Brian McColgan (@burgalveist) November 21, 2018

Hopefully that'll be that fat arsed, overrated plodder McGinn out our team for the next while. Much better with Christie and McGregor— Grant McKee (@GMcKeee) November 20, 2018
Giving Ryan Christie a proper chance was a way better option than signing John McGinn for £3m.— Jamie (@Jamie67_) November 20, 2018
McGinn, who is the grandson of former Celtic chairman Jack McGinn and grew up a Bhoys fan, has settled in well at Aston Villa, scoring two goals and assisting four from 15 Championship appearances.
Has Christie made up for Celtic's failure to sign Aston Villa's McGinn?
