Having just recently turned 20, Liverpool's right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is still learning all he can about the game. Speaking in the latest edition of the official Liverpool FC magazine, the young Reds talent revealed that James Milner is who he takes his influence from every day.
“I’d say James Milner is the most consistent player I’ve ever played or trained with – I’ve never seen him have a bad session or a bad game,” says Alexander-Arnold.
“He’s so reliable and so versatile as well and that’s everything you want in a player."
Milner will be 33 in January but still appears to have the fitness levels of a player in his mid-20s. The revelations about his attitude and approach will come as no surprise to fans of any team Milner has played for, as he has always been known to be the one man who is guaranteed to give 100% at all times.
“He’ll put his body on the line for the team and he’s non-stop. When times are hard, he’ll put in a tackle that lifts everyone and gets everyone up for the game. He brings the energy that the team needs." Alexander-Arnold said.
“Off the pitch, he holds the highest standards that I’ve probably ever seen in someone.
“He demands a lot from himself and seeing that on a daily basis is incredible. He’ll never give up in training, he’ll never stop running, and it gives you that motivation to do the same.”
The impact such a professional can have on a young and impressionable kid such as Alexander-Arnold cannot be underestimated. Even to this day we still hear stories of players who, now retired, were mesmerised by the commitment shown, day in day out, by players such as Roy Keane.
It is that desire to always improve which Alexander-Arnold needs to take with him throughout his playing days. Milner is in the twilight of his career now but still wants to better himself on the pitch every day.
If Alexander-Arnold applies himself to training in anywhere near the same fashion as Milner has been doing for years, then Liverpool and England could potentially have another world-class star on their hands.
