Rangers fans are laying into one of their former youth team players after he claimed the Ibrox side should not have been awarded a penalty during Sunday’s 7-1 win against Motherwell.

The incident, which resulted in a second yellow card for visiting defender Carl McHugh, proved a turning point in a game in which Rangers had only nine minutes earlier been pegged back to 1-1.

Speaking to BBC Sportscene afterwards, Michael Stewart blamed the movement of McHugh’s arms towards the ball on “biomechanics”, and that therefore the decision to penalise the Motherwell defender was incorrect, even though the player’s own manager had no complaints.

“It had a big part to play in the match,” said Stewart. “Alfredo Morelos makes a meal (of the first booking). That was not a yellow card, Carl McHugh came into the challenge with very little contact.

“I don’t think it’s a penalty. In the rules, the position of someone’s arms is irrelevant. It’s not an offence in itself for your arms to be raised.

“First and foremost, the referee has got to think it’s a deliberate act and it’s not for me. It’s not a second yellow card.

“It’s not a penalty kick, it’s not deliberate.”

This is what those of a Rangers persuasion are saying about the former midfielder who, for context, was denied a chance to return to Ibrox from Manchester United following a trial spell in 2004…

James Tavernier scored the resulting spot-kick to restore Rangers’ lead, following Scott Arfield’s early opener.

And further goals from Alfredo Morelos, Glenn Middleton, Arfield and Eros Grezda (2) ensured an emphatic win for Steven Gerrard’s side, who moved to third in the standings with a game in hand on second-place Hearts.
