Well that didn’t last long.
On Wednesday, the Sun reported a goal-shy Crystal Palace side were hoping to add some much needed quality to their attack with a £10 million January deal for Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck.
And the report added that the Gunners could be willing to cash in on the former Manchester United man, given that he will be a free agent at the end of the season and looked unlikely to sign a new contract.
But, just two days later, Palace’s best laid plans appear to be in ruins already.
And it was not just Arsenal fans who were left holding their head in their heads as Welbeck was stretchered off with a suspected broken ankle in the 0-0 Europa League draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night.
The England international is expected to miss most of the 2018/19 campaign now, meaning a January switch to Selhurst Park is surely off the cards. And this has only added to the frustration among the Eagles support.
Surely Danny Welbeck only had to say, no I don't want to join #cpfc— rickerz (@rickerz61) November 9, 2018
Breaking your ankle is a bit extreme don't you think?
So, Welbeck got injured. Must be his way of forcing a move to us. Injured FC #cpfc— Midgecpfc (@Midgecpfc) November 9, 2018
Palace linked with Welbeck all week. Palace fans getting excited about signing an actual prem-level striker. Welbeck breaks his ankle.. #cpfc— Cem Tuna (@cemmyt88) November 9, 2018
gutted for welbeck ffs— wilf_fan (@JasonCPFC) November 8, 2018
If there was any realism in us signing Welbeck in January, there goes that plan. #CPFC— Martin Patrick (@mpatrick_uk) November 8, 2018

With Christian Benteke and Alexander Sorloth showing they are not the answer, a new centre-forward remains the top priority for a Crystal Palace side who have not scored a home goal from open play in the Premier League this season.
