Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that Newcastle United’s foreign players tend to avoid the press, so they haven’t even known about the criticism heading their way.

Newcastle’s players came under serious pressure due to their failure to win any of their first 10 Premier League matches.

There was even speculation that Benitez could lose his job in the papers, when Newcastle were off form.

But Benitez insists that Newcastle’s players were not dented with the mounting criticism in the media.

“The fans are clever. They know we have to stick together, it is the only way,” he said.

"For the players, I don’t think it made a difference. The players don’t read the press; especially the foreign players, they are not reading everything.”
