Some Rangers fans are discussing giving Gareth McAuley his first appearance since moving to Ibrox.
McAuley signed a one-year deal with Steven Gerrard's side at the start of September, but has yet to feature in Rangers colours - prompting the club's former captain, Barry Ferguson, to admit this week he had forgotten the 38-year-old was even at Ibrox.
According to the Rangers coach, Michael Beale, McAuley is closing in on a first-team breakthrough having appeared for the Gers' reserves at the weekend, although it is likely to arrive after the upcoming break for internationals.
But with the performances of Joe Worrall and Nikola Katic recently called into question, the following Rangers fans hope it is sooner than that...
Time for Gareth Macauley to start for rangers— bluecoop (@bluecoop1) November 4, 2018
Goldson has played every game I believe, playing a partnership of Katic and Mcauley in moscow wouldn’t be the worst idea imo— George Smith (@george_smith63) November 4, 2018
Agreed mate him and goldson would boss it— Raymond Hardie (@RHardie54) November 4, 2018
Wonder if Gareth McAuley will be involved on Thursday in Moscow. Might be the sort of game that would suit him and get him fit enough to be an option going forward.— Daniel Candeias’ Backheel Fan (@euangtaylor) November 4, 2018
I’d have big Gareth McAuley in there driving them on and we clearly need a creative centre mid in January plus something different up front .. again this is what happens when you ask young loans to play like seasoned professionals— Sheik ma haun (@71Malks) November 3, 2018
I’d have big Gareth McAuley in beside Goldson— Sheik ma haun (@71Malks) November 5, 2018
Seen that, like to see him make an appearance on Sunday— Scott (@SB_1872) November 4, 2018
Goldson being on form was a big part of that partnership working. Helping walk Katic through things, as Gerrard said. Don't think it's a coincidence that Katic's worst game came with Goldson off form. Maybe McAuley could help if he gets fit— Ross (@McPodge) November 3, 2018
McAuley spent seven years at West Bromwich Albion, for whom he was a Premier League regular until his release at the end of last season, and has 79 caps for Northern Ireland.
He previously played for Lincoln City, Leicester City and Ipswich Town, after starting his career across the Irish Sea.
Should Rangers start McAuley against Spartak Moscow or Motherwell this week?
