When Wolverhampton Wanderers lured Portugal star Joao Moutinho to the Molineux in the summer is raised eyebrows.

Wolverhampton Wanderers snapped up Moutinho from Monaco for just £5million after winning promotion back to the Premier League.

The 31-year-old added to Wolves’ growing Portuguese contingent which includes manager Nuno Espirito Santo, goalkeeper Rui Patricio and midfielder Ruben Neves.

But Moutinho was comfortably the highest profile given he is Portugal’s third most-capped player with 113 appearances for his country, who he helped win Euro 2016.

The move stirred understandable excitement among Wolves fans.

Sceptics questioned whether the diminutive midfielder could stand up to the rigours of the Premier League, especially coming to English football in the twilight of his career.

Moutinho has certainly proved any doubters wrong, though, if new statistics are anything to go by.

That’s because Moutinho is rubbing shoulders with the likes of David Silva, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah when it comes to the most chances created in the top flight (Daily Mail).

Manchester City ace Silva leads the way with 31 chances created.

But Moutinho makes the list in 10th with 20 chances created, the same as Liverpool hero Salah and only five less than fourth-placed Hazard, widely regarded the best player in the Premier League.

Clearly the old adage good things come in small packages still rings true.

At a paltry £5 million in the crazy modern transfer market Moutinho has already proved one of the bargains of the summer.

If he continues his fine form and fires Wolves to a strong finish he will single-handedly pay back his fee several times over.
