Memphis Depay outburst shows West Ham may have dodged an expensive bullet in the summer

West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini signed nine players in the summer but Memphis Depay was not one of them despite being linked.

According to The Daily Star West Ham have held an interest in Holland star Depay as far back as last January.

The Hammers were mentioned again as a possible destination in the summer with reliable insider @ExWHUemployee telling Episode 94 of The West Ham Way radio show that Manuel Pellegrini was considering making a move for the attacker.

Having failed to establish himself at Manchester United, Depay left for Lyon in France where he has scored 30 goals in 80 games.

The Hammers were believed to have originally wanted the 24-year-old as a replacement for Dimitri Payet.

Meanwhile Pellegrini ended up spending £60 million signing attacking duo Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko instead as part of a £100 million splurge.

And it seems the Chilean's judgement has proved wise if recent events over in France are anything to go by.

Speaking in the mixed zone following Lyon’s 2-1 victory over Angers, Depay launched a furious outburst about being dropped from the starting line-up.

“I am fed up with this situation," Depay said in the mixed zone as reported by Get Football News France.

"Last year, I thought I had a great season. I am 24 and if I want to go to new levels, I need to be placed on a certain trajectory. Great players play all matches.

"This is the fourth time I have found myself on the bench… I deserve better. A player like me deserves more respect. I should be playing every match.”

Whether he had a point or not Depay clearly went about things in entirely the wrong way.

Pellegrini seems to have instilled a good team spirit and work ethic in his squad if Saturday's heroic 1-1 draw at Leicester City is anything to go by as the Hammers fought hard for an hour with 10 men.

Depay may have talent. But his poor attitude means it is probably an expensive bullet dodged for West Ham.

The Dutch forward did not get off lightly, though.

According to L'Equipe, Depay was given a dressing down by manager Bruno Genesio in front of the entire squad.

According to L'Equipe Génésio is understood to have said the following: “I want to apologise Memphis. I want to apologise for all the times you were late, notably from pre-season this summer, to apologise for all the kit that you wear that does not belong to the club, to apologise for the way you conducted yourself during the warm-up against Angers, your lateness and your lack of effort. Memphis, if you want to have a great career, you must have humility.”

Even though Pellegrini has now lost Yarmolenko to injury for the rest of the season it sounds like West Ham are better off without Depay.
