Forest were knocked out of the Carabao Cup 3-2 by Burton.
Nottingham Forest suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss to rivals Burton Albion on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup at the Pirelli Stadium – and Forest fans have hammered summer signing Michael Hefele.
Aitor Karanka decided to overhaul his squad and make 10 changes to the side that drew with Leeds United on Saturday evening in the Championship, with only Matty Cash retaining his place.
It backfired on the Spanish boss, with Burton dominating and even missing a penalty in the first half through striker Liam Boyce, who blazed over Luke Steele’s goal.
Burton opened the scoring through a Saidy Janko own goal, before Scott Fraser doubled their advantage. Substitute Lewis Grabban got one back, before Jake Hesketh scored Burton’s third. Arvin Appiah scored late on, but to no avail.
The defeat, in which Hefele partnered Michael Dawson at centre-back, sees Burton progress into the last eight of the competition while Forest will have to wait until the FA Cup comes around to go on another run.
Hefele, 28, joined Forest from Huddersfield in the summer, but has been in and out of the side as Karanka struggles to identify his best centre-back pairing. Danny Fox and Tobias Figuerido were used on Saturday.
But his display against Burton will have done him no favours of working his way back into the starting eleven, with the majority of Forest fans fuming with his performance.
We may have robbed Huddersfield for Lolley but they’ve had our pants down getting money for Hefele #nffc— Steve Gibson (@Gibbo8) October 30, 2018
Absolutely disgraceful tonight. Watson and Hefele were pathetic tonight I’d have them nowhere near that starting XI Saturday #nffc— Thomas Palmer (@Thomas_Palmer88) October 30, 2018
I wouldn’t be surprised if he drafted on in during January you know given that performance from Hefele tonight.— Lee Clarke (@Clarkey_No1) October 30, 2018
And I’ll add Hefele was poor tonight too with and without the ball. And keeping two holding midfielders on at 2 down to a league one side. Never thought I’d say this but boy we missed Fox tonight.— David Payne (@TheBoxingWriter) October 30, 2018
When hefele sign I was ridiculed for same we don’t need him well I still stick with my first assumption. Should have kept worrall.— Barry Spencer (@redbazza1957) October 30, 2018
Can see why Huddersfield turned hefele out. He’s extremely limited #nffc— Tony Martin (@nffcSVC) October 30, 2018
I can see why Bridcutt was sold for 500k after that performance.— East Midland Reds © (@IlkestonRed) October 30, 2018
Watson terrible AGAIN.
Hefele played like a school kid #nffc
