Toby Alderweireld reportedly wanted £180,000-a-week at Tottenham Hotspur, but Spurs felt that was much more than they were willing to pay.

While Toby Alderweireld is enjoying a good run in Mauricio Pochettino’s side, there remains a major question mark over his Tottenham future with his contract issue yet to be resolved.

Most Spurs fans would be forgiven for resigning themselves to the fact that he is probably going to be leaving before next season. According to Football London, his deal expires in the summer, but Tottenham can take up the option to extend the terms by a year – that however, would trigger a £25 million release clause that would probably make his departure almost as likely.

Football London reports that talks stalled last season with the Belgian asking for a wage of £180,000-a-week while Tottenham were only willing to pay the centre-back £130,000-a-week.

With Alderweireld turning 30 before the season concludes, Spurs’ stance seemed fairly understandable given their previous reluctance to compete with some of their title rivals when it comes to player salaries.

But it could now be argued that Alderweireld’s demands look a lot more reasonable given a report regarding the contract that a former Spurs target has apparently agreed.

According to The Sun, Luke Shaw has signed a deal worth £190,000-a-week at Manchester United. The contract marks a remarkable turnaround in his Old Trafford career as it was not too long ago that the left-back was expected to leave the club, with The Times reporting ahead of the summer that Spurs wanted to sign the defender.

While Tottenham may have had no intention of going anywhere near what Shaw is now set to be earning, Alderweireld can look at the left-back’s wages and argue that his demands do not look to be that ridiculous given that Shaw is only starting to look as though he has turned a corner with Jose Mourinho’s side.

It would be a surprise if Tottenham changed their stance and decided to offer Alderweireld £180,000-a-week, but perhaps Shaw’s new deal has made an agreement even more unlikely as the former Southampton loanee may perhaps now have questions as to why he should compromise on his demands either.
