The Tottenham midfielder is set to start for England against Spain this evening, with Jordan Henderson suspended.
And Carragher has backed Gareth Southgate’s decision to give Winks the nod in the fixture.
"In midfield, maybe Harry Winks,” Carragher said, when asked who should start for the Three Lions.
“He played really well for Spurs against Barcelona in the Champions League, against similar type of players.
“Again, it won't be easy, but I think in Seville on Monday night, we are going to have to do as well as we can to keep the ball against Spain. Winks is as good as anyone who can come in for Jordan Henderson in terms of technical ability.”
Winks has made just two starts for Tottenham in the Premier League this season, but appears to be getting back to his best.
The Spurs man struggled with injury after making a blistering start to last season, but he looks match sharp again now.
Winks offers England a more creative option from midfield, with Henderson’s and Eric Dier’s main strengths lying in their defensive qualities.
England drew 0-0 against Croatia in their last match, and Southgate’s side will be hoping his side pose more of a threat with Winks in the line-up later this evening.
