Like his father Diego, Giovanni Simeone has taken Serie A by storm. But unlike Simeone senior, who starred as a tenacious midfielder at Inter Milan and Lazio, Giovanni is developing a reputation as one of the most exciting young strikers around.
The 23-year-old scored 14 Serie A goals in his debut season at Fiorentina. And, as a result, he caught the eye of a Tottenham Hotspur side who are still looking for a striker capable of taking the pressure off Harry Kane.
But it seems that Simeone has a different plan in mind. Not many players get the chance to work with their father at an elite footballing giant, after all.
“I never had the chance to be coached by my father. My old man has never asked me about the possibility but playing for Atletico would be amazing,” Simeone told Fox Sports when asked about his dream move.
Diego Simeone has transformed Atletico Madrid on and off the pitch since he arrived in La Liga in 2011, turning Los Colchoneros from an underachieving, mid-table team into one of Europe’s most feared sides, having won the Spanish top flight in 2014 while reaching the Champions League final on two occasions.
And should Atletico show an interest in reuniting one Simeone with the other, Spurs’ hopes could be dead in the water.
