In comments reported by the Daily Record, Andy Robertson suggested that Allan McGregor was outstanding in Scotland's defeat to Israel, and insisted that the Rangers goalkeeper is the only player who deserves to keep his place for their next game.
The Scots' Nations League campaign suffered a setback this week when Israel came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory. Charlie Mulgrew had given Alex McLeish's men the lead, but a Kieran Tierney own goal settled the game after the home side had equalised.
It was another disappointing night for Scotland, who actually remain top of their group on goal difference. But Liverpool's £10 million star Robertson (via BBC Sport) insisted that McGregor is the one player who can hold his head up high after the loss.
“The gaffer picked the same starting XI as against Albania but will that stay the same for the next qualifier? If I was him I would be doubting every position because none of us showed up apart from Greegs, who kept the score down," he said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“He was outstanding but other than that I don’t think anyone played to their capabilities."
It will surprise no Rangers fan that McGregor is being lauded while on international duty. The stopper has been a fantastic signing for the Gers and the Ibrox faithful would have been adamant that he deserved his chance ahead of Craig Gordon.
In fact, it is perhaps fair to say that in a summer where Steven Gerrard seemingly oversaw several excellent signings, McGregor's return was potentially the best deal of the lot.
The goalkeeper came back to Rangers on a free transfer and has barely put a foot wrong for the Gers this season. And Scotland will now be hoping to capitalise on his impressive form after failing to hold onto their lead in Haifa.
