A number of Celtic fans were thrilled to be linked with Samir Memisevic towards the end of the summer transfer window.
According to Oslobedenje, the Scottish Premiership champions were keen to sign the 6ft 1ins defender, who had impressed for FC Groningen during the last two seasons in the Eredivisie. And a number of supporters were impressed, which is understandable given how shaky Celtic had looked at the back in the early stages of the season.
Interestingly, the report added that Memisevic was open to joining Brendan Rodgers’ side. But, with time ticking down in the transfer window, Celtic signed another eastern European centre-back instead, landing long-time target Filip Benkovic on loan from Leicester City.
It is perhaps no mystery why Memisevic was allegedly keen to leave Groningen for Celtic. Brendan Rodgers’ side might be having a somewhat difficult campaign but that is nothing compared to the struggles of Groningen.
They are second from bottom in the Eredivisie, having won just one of their eight league games so far. Memisevic has started every one of those but has been far from his best, with Groningen conceding on 15 occasions.
With Dedryck Boyata expected to leave next year, and Benkovic potentially returning to Leicester in January, Memisevic should not give up hope of a dream move to Britain.
