A number of Brentford fans have taken to Twitter to react to the dramatic news that Dean Smith has left Griffin Park to take the vacant manager's job at Aston Villa.
Unsurprisingly, the boyhood Villa fan appeared to be a contender for the post from the moment that Steve Bruce was dismissed in the wake of their 3-3 draw with Preston North End last week.
But the longer the search went on, the more likely it appeared that Smith would remain at Brentford and another name would be appointed by the Villans, with a large number of candidates linked in an incredibly short space of time.
Then, in what felt like a turn of events that came out of nowhere, Smith was quickly appointed by Villa on Wednesday night, with John Terry becoming his assistant following his retirement from playing.
While Brentford fans may have feared the possibility of Smith being tempted to leave the Bees, it must have still come as a surprise how quickly the pieces fell into place.
In reaction to the news, a number of Bees fans have sent their former boss plenty of classy messages, thanking him for the brilliant work that he has done with the club and wishing him well at Villa - except when they come up against the Bees, of course - but there are one or two supporters who actually feel that they will benefit from this move more than the Villans will.
Here is some of the reaction to the announcement...
Best of luck Dean, classy and honest guy. Interesting to see who we appoint now— Matt Giles (@MattGilo3) October 10, 2018
Sad to see him go but I wish him well except against us.— (((Queen Snowflake))) (@sarangipani) October 10, 2018
Actually surprised he’s gone, best of luck to Deano, top man— Nathan (@NathanBFC_) October 10, 2018
Good luck Dean. I hope you are given the time to show them how good you are.— Phil s (@flatfootphil) October 10, 2018
No hard feelings towards Dean Smith, a top man and a top Manager. I hope it works out for him at Villa. I’m also very confident that we’ll be just fine without him. I have absolute faith in Mathew Benham and his team and the system they’ve put in place. COY— Tim Nicholls (@TimNicho11s) October 10, 2018
All the best to Dean Smith and thank you for all the fantastic football it’s been a joy to watch. We will push forwards as we always do. Villa you’ve got a good one. Ps please do not return for our players— Graham purser (@gjpurser) October 11, 2018
We played played great football before Smith came and we'll continue to play great football after he goes. (that's the secret villa fans!) Can't blame him for wanting to go to his boyhood club. Bad move for him though, too much pressure— Darren Bullen (@BullenDarren) October 10, 2018
Very sudden. In many ways I never really felt he was the manager to lead us to promotion, but has still done a decent job over the last few years, with at times not great squads. Sad to see him go but can’t say I wouldn’t do the same in his shoes. Excited to see what’s next.— Sam (@Brentfordfan14) October 10, 2018
