Be honest, you hadn’t heard of Krzysztof Piatek a few months ago. But the 23-year-old Polish striker could be about to become one of the biggest names in the transfer market.
Piatek joined Genoa from Cracovia in the summer for a fee of just £4 million and it’s fair to say that is money well spent. He has scored a quite remarkable 13 goals in eight games since arriving in Italy.
And there is one stat in particular that sums up just what a special, unique talent Genoa could have on their hands. A goal in the 3-1 defeat to Parma this weekend means Piatek has now scored in his first seven games in Serie A.
No player has done that since the legendary Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta in 1994/95 – though Piatek has a long way to go to match the Fiorentina hero’s goal-scoring streak of 12 games.
Genoa president Enrico Preziosi told Football Italia at the start of October that he would be ‘crazy’ to cash in on Piatek in the January transfer window so Tottenham, Liverpool and co might be wasting their time making a move in the winter.
Though if Piatek maintains this remarkable run of form, he could be worth a lot more than £30 million this time next year.
