Gayle scored twice for West Brom against Reading, although for his second, he barely touched the ball.
The striker managed to get the slightest of contacts on Kyle Bartley’s header, and ran off celebrating, as all good goalscorers do.
Gayle was not too far off scoring a hat-trick, but Barnes decided to shoot into the bottom corner, rather than lay the ball off to the Albion attacker.
And Barnes joked: “I’m surprised he didn’t try to claim my one as well!
“We’re always having a laugh.
“It is great we are all scoring goals and setting each other up. It’s great for the confidence of the team.”
West Brom have been by far and away the Championship’s most dangerous attacking team so far.
Gayle and Barnes have been a key reason behind this, with the summer signings taking no time to settle at the Hawthorns.
Gayle has hit eight goals in his first 11 league appearances for Albion, while Barnes has five goals to his name already this term.
West Brom are next in action in two weekends' time, when they take on Wigan Athletic.
