Aston Villa fans want their club back. And what better way to do exactly that than by hiring a bona fide club hero as their new manager?
According to the Birmingham Mail, Stiliyan Petrov has thrown his hat into the ring to take over from Steve Bruce at Villa Park.
The 39-year-old ticks a lot of boxes. He is a hugely popular figure at Villa Park after his seven-year spell as their influential midfielder between 2006 and 2013. Petrov was also the captain for a number of years, displaying the leadership skills that could stand him in good stead in the dugout.
Furthermore, Petrov has been learning the managerial ropes in the Second City, having spent time working alongside Villa’s U23 boss Graham Cowans.
But the overwhelming feeling among supporters is one of ‘thanks but no thanks’. Petrov has never managed a team on his own at senior level, so giving the former Bulgaria international his big break would be a major risk.
Petrov, though, would be a welcome addition to Villa’s coaching staff, where he could link up with another former captain in John Terry.
As it stands, the front-runner appears to be Thierry Henry, another managerial novice who, according to the Telegraph, has held advanced talks recently.
No Stan. Love you man, but you recommended Aleks Tonev. Killed your chances with that recommendation!— AV-FullBIFTA (@AVFullBIFTA) October 8, 2018
I don't know if I'd want him as manager but I wouldn't mind him working with Henry and Terry— lil ploop (@willfish97) October 8, 2018

Got to find a place for Petrov. #avfc. And Mellberg. Time we got to a Villa DNA and boot room mentality.— Mr Thompson (@mrthompson81) October 8, 2018
Petrov and JT part of the backroom staff would be quality.— 1/4 of migos (@ahwesty) October 8, 2018
