Shaun Maloney and Thierry Henry are seen during the International Friendly match between Scotland and Belgium at Hampden Park on September 7, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Paul Merson has stated in The Daily Star that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry would not be able to turn down the chance to manage Aston Villa.

Villa are on the lookout for a new manager following the dismissal of Steve Bruce this week.

According to The Daily Mail, former Arsenal striker Henry is the favourite to become the new manager of the Villans.

The report has also claimed that Brentford boss Dean Smith is a candidate for the Villa managerial role.

Former Villa attacking midfielder Merson has stated that 41-year-old Henry would not be able to turn down the chance to manage the Villans.

The former Arsenal star has also posed a question of Smith should he decide to leave Brentford for Villa.

Dean Smith, Manager of Brentford reacts during the Sky Bet Championship match between Brentford and Wigan on September 15, 2018 in Brentford, England.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “I’ll tell you one thing though. Henry couldn’t turn down that job. That’s a big job. If you get that job as your first in management that’s a massive result.

“But is he right for it? He’s very inexperienced. I’m a massive fan of Dean Smith at Brentford. He plays good football and he knows the division.

“He’s pulled up trees with The Bees but how long would he get at Villa, the club he grew up supporting?

“Does he take the job knowing he may only get a year or does he stay at Griffin Park where he’s basically got a job for life?”

Henry has been working as an assistant manager for Belgium, but appointing him would be a risk from Villa.

Perhaps the Villans need someone who knows the Championship inside out and can work with the current squad.
