Mikael Lustig struggled again as Scottish Premiership champions Celtic lost their Europa League fixture against Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday.

How many more below-par performances does Mikael Lustig have to produce before he loses the faith of manager Brendan Rodgers?

The long-serving Celtic right-back has looked well past his best for a while now, and was heavily criticised by supporters during the Hoops’ 1-0 win away at Rosenborg in their Europa League opener a fortnight ago.

Lustig was no better in match-day two. The 31-year-old Sweden international was at fault for Salzburg’s second goal in Celtic's 3-1 defeat at the Red Bull Arena on Thursday night, allowing the ball to bounce in the area before Takumi Minamino fired home.

So what more can Cristian Gamboa do to get a run in the team? The Costa Rican international has been behind Lustig in the pecking order ever since arriving in Glasgow from West Bromwich Albion in 2016.

Gamboa has not featured in any of Celtic’s league games so far and his most recent appearance came during the Europa League qualifier against Suduva in August.

But surely the jet-heeled 28-year-old, who impressed against Neymar in the World Cup this summer, is worth an opportunity with Lustig increasingly looking like a weak link in this Celtic side?
