Could Aston Villa raid Celtic for manager Brendan Rodgers?

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during the UEFA Europa League Group B match between Celtic and Rosenborg at Celtic Park on September 20, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has emerged as one of the bookies contenders for the vacant Aston Villa job.

Rodgers is currently the 8/1 fifth favourite for the role with SkyBet.

Links to Rodgers make sense. He came agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title with Liverpool, has won multiple trophies in Scotland with Celtic, and has even won promotion from the Championship with Swansea.

Villa could provide him with the chance to build something new, and he would be well backed in the transfer market.

One extra reason the speculation carries weight is current Villa CEO Christian Purslow.

The former Liverpool chief just missed crossing paths with Rodgers at Liverpool but is a confirmed admirer.

He told TalkSport previously that he admired Rodgers’ brand of football at Anfield.

Purslow said: “If Brendan Rodgers has changed one thing dramatically, it’s that Liverpool have become compelling at home.

“They’re very attacking.”

Whoever Villa get in next, they will want a manager capable of getting the fans onside and attacking football will be key.

In a separate interview with TalkSport, Purslow praised Rodgers’ meticulous approach, commenting about his interview for the Liverpool job: “We know Rodgers presented a 180-page vision.”

Villa would face a big task to tempt him from Celtic mid-season despite the Glasgow side’s mixed form. If they could get him, it would be a major coup.
