Some Ipswich Town supporters have called for captain Luke Chambers to be dropped from first-team action following his poor performance in the 2-0 home defeat to Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

Chambers has captained Town for a number of years now following his switch from Nottingham Forest, but at 33 years of age his influence is waning and his ability at the back steadily declining.

Boro arrived at Ipswich not having the best of records at Portman Road but they made little work of the hosts, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes with Stewart Downing in particular profiting from poor defending.

Some Ipswich supporters struggled to contain their frustration after the game, pleading for changes via Twitter.

Paul Hurst has struggled upon taking over the Ipswich managerial job in the summer, failing to win any of his 11 Championship games to date as the Tractor Boys sit in the bottom three.

With the transfer window now long gone there isn’t much Hurst can do to change Ipswich’s fortunes, and recent injuries to key attacking players such as Jonathan Walters and Ellis Harrison haven’t helped either.

Goals have been hard to come by for Ipswich having notched just a paltry eight league goals so far, while defensively they looked all over the place against Boro and were lucky to only concede two.

Chambers did manage to record four aerial winners and six effective clearances but playing out from the back isn’t his strongest suit and for Ipswich to succeed playing that way they may have to look at replacing him.
