Villa threw away a 2-0 half time lead to only draw 3-3 with Preston North End on Tuesday night, and that proved to be Steve Bruce's final game in charge, as he was sacked earlier today.
After weeks of speculation and fan dissatisfaction, Bruce has gone – and new owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are now charged with the task of finding a new boss, with the aim of finding one during the international break.
They won't be doing it without help though, as chief executive Christian Purslow will play a big role, as will super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has strong ties with Villa.
The Birmingham Mail now report that Villa want to land Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca, and are looking for Mendes to assist their bid given that he is Fonseca's agent.
That would be quite the move from Villa, given that Fonseca is currently a Champions League manager with Shakhtar, with his side in a group alongside Hoffenheim, Lyon and Manchester City.
The 45-year-old has won five trophies since taking charge of Shakhtar in 2016, winning two successive league titles and Ukrainian Cups too.
Fonseca was heavily linked with the Everton job earlier this year but chose to stay in Ukraine, meaning it would be quite the shock if he now made the move to Villa Park – but with Mendes on board, nothing is impossible, as we have already seen with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
