Penalty or no penalty?
That was the debate raging on social media after Blackburn Rovers’ 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Lancashire club were leading against Aitor Karanka’s side with ten minutes to go, only for Joe Lolley to go down in the area under a challenge from Jack Rodwell.
Whether the former England international made contact with Lolley’s leg, however, is only one side of the argument. As a Blackburn fan has pointed out on Twitter, Rodwell certainly gave the referee a decision to make with a rather lazy attempt at a tackle inside his own box.
Sunderland fans are understandably engaging in a little schadenfreude after Rodwell allegedly refused to leave the Stadium of Light in January, staying and hoovering up his wages before being released in the summer, according to the Chronicle.
And it seems that a number of Blackburn fans are already losing faith in the former Everton and Manchester City player.
It is worth remembering, however, that Rodwell has played just 31 minutes of Championship football since arriving at Ewood Park, and perhaps that mistimed attempt at a tackle on Saturday would not have happened if he had a bit more match fitness in his legs.
Jack Rodwell was free and is still a waste of money #Rovers— Harris Hussain (@Harris_BRFC98) September 29, 2018

Thought he was decent but very slow.— Adam Smithy (@footysmith__6) September 30, 2018
Very soft pen but Rodwell gave the ref a decision to make. Whole defence is a shambles. Another point closer to surviving. Anyone who thinks we should be aiming higher than that is deluded— Adam lodge (@lodgie34) September 29, 2018
We did tell you. In fact I think the footballing world told you. He’s stealing a living as a footballer. Dunno what happened to the lad that was at Everton but he’s completely finished.— Jason Reveley (@JAReveley) September 30, 2018
Disgraceful decision but delighted it happened to Rodwell.— Kitch (@1986Kitch) September 29, 2018
