A difficult couple of weeks at Tottenham Hotspur have shed light on why Mauricio Pochettino seemingly wants to bring a combative central midfielder to North London in the New Year.

Victor Wanyama has struggled for game time recently thanks to injury problems while Eric Dier has been far below his best of late too. Mousa Dembele, meanwhile, looks set to be on his way out of Spurs in the near future with links to China not going anywhere fast.

So expect Hector Herrera’s name to keep cropping up over the next few months.

According to talkSPORT, the Porto captain is a target for Spurs, who are set to step up their interest in the January transfer window.

The Mexican international will be a free agent next summer and, according to CM Jornal, he has now rejected three separate offers of a contract extension at the current Primeira Liga champions. It is understood that Herrera wants to try his hand elsewhere after catching the eye for Mexico at this summer’s World Cup.

Spurs face plenty of competition, however, with CM Jornal adding that Roma, Barcelona, Real Madrid and North London rivals Arsenal also keeping a close eye on the 28-year-old.
