Aston Villa reportedly couldn't afford to sign Liverpool starlet Harry Wilson, allowing Championship rivals Derby County to strike a loan deal.

Aston Villa could do with a player like Harry Wilson right now.

Steve Bruce has found himself under increasing pressure at Villa Park in recent weeks after another testing run of results. Villa have won just one of their last eight games in all competitions, which have included a 4-1 thrashing at Sheffield United, a home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday and an EFL Cup exit at the hands of Burton Albion.

The Midland giants have scored just nine goals in that time too with Aston Villa lacking that attacking spark and a player who can turn the game in the blinking of an eye, particularly with Jack Grealish well below his best.

So who knows how different things could have been if Wilson had moved to Villa Park rather than Derby County?

According to the Birmingham Mail, Villa couldn’t afford the £1 million loan fee demanded by Liverpool during the height of their financial meltdown in the summer, opening the door for Derby to bring the Welsh international to Pride Park.

And Wilson’s last two outings will have only rubbed salt into Aston Villa’s wounds. The 21-year-old inspired a 3-1 comeback victory against high-flying Brentford on Saturday before stunning Old Trafford with a scorching free-kick in Derby’s famous EFL Cup win away to Manchester United.

Aston Villa could have salvaged a few extra points if they had a player of Wilson’s brilliance.
