Darren Moore's men went into the clash with the top flight side off the back of an excellent run of form that had taken West Brom up to third in the Championship.
But Palace controlled much of the game. While their last two goals came in the final 15 minutes at The Hawthorns, the Eagles never looked particularly troubled after taking a sixth-minute lead.
It was a difficult night for West Brom, and amongst the Baggies players who struggled was Sam Field. The academy prospect is clearly destined for a bright future, but he did not enjoy the best night of his career.
And while a number of Baggies fans were critical of Field's display, much of the criticism was actually aimed at Moore with the youngster featuring at centre-back as part of a back three. The gamble did not pay off, and it would be a big surprise if he was involved in that role again anytime soon if Moore can avoid it.
There were some supporters who felt that Field's performance highlighted that he is still not ready for regular first-team football, but most of the fans on social media seemed to have sympathy for the youngster given that few would have expected him to be used as a defender during this cup run.
Here is what some of the fans made of Field's performance...
Look Field is a midfielder and always will be , even if we are thread bare at the back he shouldn’t be playing him there— stephen sutherland (@stephen95122548) September 25, 2018
Mears, Townsend, Field, Robson Kanu, Myhill, all absolutely shocking! And the changes that were made were never going to impact! Only people that looked like they wanted to play were mozza and Hoolahan and brunt when he came on! RKanu you oxygen thief— chris Jones (@chrisJo08958021) September 25, 2018
Feel sorry for Field. Clearly needs to develop his game as a midfielder but being forced to play as a centre-back because we haven't got enough of them. So he's forced to "do a job" in the cup so the others can have a rest. #wba https://t.co/3QvyhcVqo1— Ian Murphy (@ianmurphy89) September 25, 2018
Wouldn’t mind never seeing Robson-Kanu in a @wba shirt again. Field is weak and nervy at centre back. Brunt seems to have forgotten how to pass over night. But overall I’ve had a wicked day with the Mrs.— Adam Stevens (@AdamLibertyLies) September 25, 2018
Felt a bit for Field tonight. Not his position and it showed, got run ragged by the forward quality of Townsend. Our replacement wing backs are scarily poor in comparison to Phillips/Gibbs. Worrying considering how we rely on them in our style of play. #wba— Jake (@jakedf96) September 25, 2018
Sam Field isn’t a central defender, he’d have got more out of this little cup run getting game time playing in the midfield #WBA— Karl Latham (@KarlJLatham) September 25, 2018
Saying that we have had 2 academy players get 90 minutes and another 2 getting game time. Field definately not a cb. Harper didn't look out of place and was the pick of the academy lads for me #WBA— Andrew Beech (@beechyboy90) September 25, 2018
Sam Field has just been embarrassed for the 3rd goal. That’s why he’s not in the team..not good enough yet #wba— AW (@AdLW10) September 25, 2018
