Penney has only played six times for Sheffield Wednesday's first team, but already looks the part.
The 20-year-old academy full-back returned from a game's rest to pick up where he left off - marauding down the left-hand side and mesmerising opposition players with his pair of quick feet - as Wednesday overcame Aston Villa 2-1 on Saturday.
Even downbeat Villa supporters were complimentary of Penney's performance afterwards. And Owls fans, justifiably, want their club to take action and tie down the Chesterfield native to a new a long-term contract.
Got to be giving Penney a new contract ASAP, not seen him have a bad game. Brilliant again today #swfc— Rhys Nuttall (@rwn1992) September 22, 2018
Please give Matt Penney a 40 year contract right away #swfc— maximus (@maxgarniss) September 22, 2018
Penney. Lifetime contract. Now.— Joe (@JDSWFC) September 22, 2018
As recently as the summer just passed, Sheffield Wednesday learned the hard way what can happen when good young players aren't tied down quickly enough.
Not only did the Yorkshire side lose two from the above camp at the end of their contracts, they were forced to sit hands-tied as both players, George Hirst and Sean Clare, exploited (annoyingly legal) loopholes to join foreign clubs for a fraction of the fee due - potentially seven figures each - had they remained in English football.
And one can only hope that, with Penney's deal due to expire in as little as nine months' time, Hillsborough's powers-that-be are already in the process are drafting a new one, before it's too late.
